The ‘ Aitreya Brahmna’ ( Book 8, Chapter 15) even uses the word ‘ Ekrat’, and together with ‘Satapatha Brahmana’ ( XIII. The concepts of paramount power & imperial sovereignty was so well established in early times that it expressed itself in appropriate technical terms, such as ‘ Adhiraja’, ‘ Rajadhiraja’ or ‘Samrat’ liberally used in the Vedic texts. The Rigveda tells of King Sudas who won a famous victory at the ‘ Battle of Ten Kings ‘ ( Dasa-rajna), representing about forty different Rigvedic people. The tradition of such great kings and emperors go back to Vedas. India had seen many great eulers before him like Mahapadma Nanda, Ajatshatru, or Bimbisara, whose reign was enlivened by the moving personalities of Buddha & Mahavira.Īnd even before these we read of earlier emperors with high-sounding titles acquired by conquests & formally conferred upon them with appropriate religious ceremonies announcing such achievements. He figures as the first ‘historical’ Emperor of India in the sense that he is the earliest emperor in Indian history whose historicity can be established on the solid grounds of ascertained chronology.
